Future of Mobile Technology_research

Future of Mobile Technology is a research collaboration between the Design Department of Politecnico di Milano and IxD Lab of ITU Copenhagen. This collaboration was conducted within the PhD “Design Fiction 4 Critical Thinking: Designing consciously Technological Artefacts to tackle aware behaviours” (supervised by prof. Venere Ferraro).

This research project aims to explore the “Future of Mobile Technology” using the Protocol with tools developed by Mila Stepanović, at different project stages.

In particular, the team aimed to investigate possible actions and solutions that might bring smartphone users to less problematic use of these technologies and technological devices in the near future.

The output of this research is three diegetic prototypes that explore new forms and interaction rituals that might help smartphone users develop more intentional and aware usage patterns for this technology:

1| The Planning Phone [find out more >>>]

2| The Parasite Phone [find out more >>>]

3| The Placeful Phone [find out more >>>]

In conclusion, in this research, the authors analyse the possible strategies for intentional smartphone use embedded in the forms and interaction modes of these fictional artefacts. To analyse and reflect on the design ideas and take the feedback from the focus group into account, the authors used the theoretical framework from Kühn et al as a guide (Lena Kühn, Charlotte Hermann, and Laurens Boer. 2019. Design Research Themes for Mindful Interaction. In Proceedings of the 17th Scandinavian Conference on Health Informatics, 24–29). The authors extracted five design research themes were identified that serve as starting points or components of design artefacts to develop more intentional use of interactive technology: Barriers, Authorship, Balance, Contrast, and Norms.

This analysis could produce mappings of how interaction modes based on these goals can support or inhibit different kinds of behaviours, or examine existing products for examples of how these themes operate, or put the themes to the test with real users in real-world situations.
